Sigma Beta Phi Sorority Inc. (ΣBΦ) is Canada's first predominantly Black, bilingual sorority founded in Ontario and Established in 2007 at the University of Ottawa. Currently, it is a local  sorority (female Greek lettered organization) in Ottawa with a Graduate Chapter, Sigma Alpha Alpha (ΣAA) and an Undergraduate Chapter, Beta Alpha (BA) at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.

We are an organization of young women with similar interests and passions, dedicated to fostering an interactive and inclusive community. Sigma Beta Phi was formed to help young women who share similar passions and interests to unite their individual strengths, to recognize and to accept their uniqueness in order to discover their full potential that lies inside each of young women. We are a sorority that promotes solidarity among its sisters with the purpose of establishing a climate of trust; in other words, we seek to offer support in any aspect of our member’s life.

Step Dance is a unique trait of Sigma Beta Phi, that distinguishes us from other sororities in Ottawa. It is a unique dance style based on African roots where footwork is an integral form of expression.

Throughout the past five years, we have organized and participated in many fundraisers for various causes, both locally and internationally.

We demonstrate female empowerment and success on our campuses, as well as in our communities, through our three pillars:

  1. Sisterhood

  2. Volunteerism

  3. High Academic Achievement

Our founding principles are:

  1. Solidarity

  2. Loyalty

  3. Responsibility

  4. Support

  5. Community Service
